Gasholder No. 8 is critical in transforming Kings Cross, London, into a vibrant, multi-use public space. Originally a Victorian structure, this Grade 2 Listed gasholder has been reimagined in response to a RIBA competition led by our multi-disciplinary team. The collaboration involved Buro Happold, landscape architect Studio Engleback, design storyteller Leonora Oppenheim, and illustrator Chris Haughton.
The project aimed to transform the historic gasholder into a functional, flexible space that respects its heritage while embracing modern innovation. Our proposal introduces a sheltered public area and amphitheatre within the iconic frame, designed to adapt to weather conditions and event requirements. Central to this is a movable canopy made from biomimetic, kinetic fronds. These fronds, which mimic natural movements, are solar-powered and open or close in response to environmental changes, providing shade or shelter as needed. In addition, the fronds are designed to collect rainwater, which is directed to the surrounding landscape, ensuring the space remains self-sustaining and eco-friendly.
A ramped section on the site houses a café and essential facilities. This area offers more than just amenities; it doubles as an observation deck overlooking the adjacent canal and wildlife sanctuary, giving visitors a serene space to enjoy the natural surroundings. The ramp also provides seating for events, further enhancing the flexibility of the space.
Inside the gasholder, the landscape can be transformed for various uses. Designed with movable elements, the space can host outdoor cinemas and fashion events like London Fashion Week or serve as an everyday public piazza. This adaptability ensures that the site can cater to both high-profile occasions and daily public use, creating a dynamic urban environment that responds to the needs of its visitors.
The integration of sustainable technologies, like solar power and water collection, alongside the heritage conservation of the gasholder, has created a space that merges history with innovation. This project highlights how thoughtful design can breathe new life into iconic structures, making them relevant to contemporary urban life.
