CA Symbol of Salford’s Revitalisation
The Crescent Bridge is a striking emblem of Salford’s revitalisation, elegantly spanning the River Irwell. This landmark structure features two graceful crescent-shaped masts that lean towards each other, forming an inviting archway that welcomes visitors to the Meadows. Designed in collaboration with Buro Happold’s bridge group, this contemporary footbridge integrates seamlessly into its surroundings, enhancing functionality and aesthetics.
This three-span cable-stayed structure weaves through the trees, creating a visually stunning path visible from Oldfield Road, the Crescent, and Chapel Street. Its strategic setback ensures ease of use and prioritises pedestrian safety. Each approach presents a unique perspective, continuously changing the bridge’s appearance and making it a dynamic centrepiece for the Middlewood Loop. Visitors from the bridge’s centre are treated to breathtaking views of the treetops and river unimpeded by cables or supporting structures.
Accessibility is paramount. The bridge features an inclined deck that accommodates a 5.5m change in level through a continuous 1:20 ramp, fully accessible to those with disabilities. This thoughtful design minimises the need for extensive earthworks on the embankments. At the same time, the masts vertically distribute load into the riverbanks without compromising the existing foundations of the Crescent Road bridge.
A new stairway leads to a riverside viewing platform, replacing the former Adelphi Footbridge, and sets the stage for a future riverwalk. This design connects to the riverside pub via a link bridge and allows for the potential addition of a lift or ramps, ensuring comprehensive accessibility.
Thanks to advanced modular construction techniques, much of the bridge can be prefabricated and assembled on-site, allowing for rapid construction and minimising disruption to the surrounding area. This innovative approach results in a bold statement of Salford’s growth, creating a vital link to leisure spaces and new developments while embodying the city’s vision for a sustainable future.
The Crescent Bridge is more than just a passage; it celebrates connectivity and a sense of place that inspires community and enhances the urban landscape.
